David Alaba's signing by Real Madrid was something that MARCA exclusively confirmed as early as January 18, and Los Blancos were clear back then that they had added strength to their defence.
That was particularly important with Sergio Ramos leaving and Raphael Varane's future uncertain, but Alaba himself is hoping to play as a midfielder, as he has done for Austria on countless occasions.
Carlo Ancelotti knows Alaba well, having worked with him at Bayern Munich. As well, in his previous spell in charge of Real Madrid, the Italian wanted Alaba as an option at left-back. It didn't happen, but that's where he played the Austrian during their time together in Bavaria. Under Ancelotti, Alaba played 52 times and only 11 of those were as a central defender.
Now, though, Real Madrid have more of a need for him at centre-back. On the left, they have Marcelo and Ferland Mendy competing for a place in the XI, but Casemiro needs a back-up in midfield.
Alaba doesn't want to be a left-back, despite playing 247 times there, as per Transfermarkt. In comparison, he's played 116 times at centre-back and 100 in midfield.
A condition to his signing
Alaba first established himself as a centre-back under Pep Guardiola, but the idea of moving into midfield never left his mind. In fact, when Paris Saint-Germain were interested in him in January, the player said that he would choose between them and Real Madrid depending on where he could play in midfield.
He doesn't want to be stuck in defence and made that clear this summer at Euro 2020.
"You can influence the game a lot there in both directions - attack and defence," Alaba said.
Now, Alaba will have to wait to see what Ancelotti thinks.
